Antique Brown Jasperware Jug with Cherub Design
A truly beautiful piece of antique jasperware in a most unusual and alluring brown.
A quick internet search suggests this jug is a "Dudson" brand of Jasperware, which would date its manufacture to somewhere between 1838 and 1888.
In the classic white-on-brown jasperware style, the design features 3 cherubs in relief each one holding a different musical instrument.
The jug is about 17cm high and about 7.5cm wide at the top, and a 10cm diameter base.
Charming barley twist handle.
Please note that the second jug pictured is not included in this sale.
There are holes around the top that would have been designed to hold a pewter lid but I don't think a lid was ever attached to this jug as there are no signs of commensurate wear or damage.
There is a tiny nibble on one side of the rim, otherwise in outstanding condition, especially considering its age.
What a beautiful piece for holding a bunch of fresh herbs on the kitchen bench or a pretty arrangement on the mantelpiece.
Clear markings on the base, see the photos for details as they form an important part of the condition report for this antique find.
